The Guanches and Mount Teide

Long before the arrival of Europeans, Tenerife was inhabited by the Guanches, the island's Indigenous population.

Mount Teide held great spiritual significance for the Guanches, who associated the volcano with powerful forces and ancient mythology.

According to Guanche tradition, the volcano was connected to Guayota, a powerful supernatural being associated with darkness and the mountain's interior.

A Landscape Shaped by Volcanoes

Tenerife's dramatic volcanic scenery is the result of a long history of eruptions and geological activity.

One of the most significant historical eruptions occurred in 1798, when volcanic activity on the slopes of Pico Viejo created the formations known as Narices del Teide.
